MUST KNOW: Basic Hand Hygiene Information

Keeping good hand hygiene solves about 80% of health problems.

We do many things with our hands, including eating, bathing, holding things like our bags, and even touching people, furniture, walls, and everything else. These things predispose us to several harmful microorganisms. However, these are inevitable activities. How then can we save ourselves from these harmful agents, these germs? First, let’s discuss how we leave these things inside our bodies.

  1. Scratching your eyes: It’s really not a good test to scratch your eyes with one hand. In doing so, we leave germs in the eyes and these predispose us to diseases such as conjunctivitis (which could be caused by a hand touched by the herpes simplex virus rubbed on the eyes), bacterial keratitis ( caused by Staphylococcus aureus, an organism found to be “safe” on the skin, but harmful when it enters the body – this is a case of opportunistic infections) and other infections.
  2. Rubbing the face: Statistics have shown that rubbing your face with dirty hands causes rashes, pimples and other reactive diseases. In fact, by rubbing the face, we introduce more organisms, including harmful organisms, which will lead to the formation of the aforementioned reactions.
  3. Eating with Dirty Hands: We already know that eating with dirty hands predisposes us to many gastrointestinal infections. This is the reason why most people eat and, a few minutes to a few hours after the meal, they start having diarrhea or dysentery. These also come with fever.

We infect ourselves in many other ways, but the most interesting is that there is a clear link between the methods. We would ask what the link could be. It’s simple – hygiene.

What is hygiene? In simple terms, it’s health promotion. These days, we are so engrossed in so many things that keep us healthy. Exercise for example, good food too, these are good ways to live a healthy life. Now the question is, are they the only ways? Certainly not. Why did we forget hygiene? Most people think that it is an act that is taught only to small children, but it is a very good necessity for good health. Arbitrarily, it’s the basic, the most basic.

Every part of the body requires good hygiene. In this context, we will simply focus on the hands. There are many ways to maintain good hand hygiene and we will examine them.

  1. Washing hands: this remains the most important aspect of this issue and can not be overemphasized. Our environment is harming us more and more. For example, people bleed accidentally and their blood flows to the surface. Many people with the hepatitis virus are asymptomatic. We visit so many places and we put our hands on several surfaces. Can we now imagine what will happen if we do not wash our hands? This scenario concerns the HBA virus. The same applies to bacteria and other microorganisms. So, we should wash our hands as often as possible. Especially when we come back from wherever we go.
  2. Avoid using your hands on sensitive parts of the body: things such as scratching your eyes, rubbing your face, touching open wounds, etc. should be checked.

  1. Cutting Finger Nails: Long fingers contain dirt and everything associated with it. This statement is enough to make you cut your fingers and keep them clean. Do not bite, chew or eat your nails.

  1. Use rags instead of hands: In cases of sneezing and coughing, we should learn to use small rags or tissues instead of our hands. This prevents or reduces the spread of disease.
