See Why You Really Need to Join the Gym

Everyone knows that joining a gym is a good idea. Now, a new study is a great way to get a better fitness club than to get rid of it.

Iowa State University 405 relatively healthy adults, half of them had attended a gym for at least 30 days and the other half for at least a few months.

The resting blood pressure, heart rate, and body mass index of all participants were measured and questionnaires were completed on their time spent exercising, sitting, and practicing various activities. activities every week.

The researchers then put the participants in the spotlight for 150 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity, or 75 minutes per week, including at least two days of weight training or other muscle building activities.

The difference between the groups was Duck-chul Lee, an adjunct professor of kinesiology. While non-members averaged only 137 minutes per week, those who worked at a gym averaged 484 minutes per week. Only 18% of non-members have guidelines for both physical activity and strength training, compared to 75% of members.

Overall, researchers calculated that gym membership was 14 times higher. The results were similar in men and women and were adjusted for health problems such as hypercholesterolemia, arthritis and asthma.

Not only do gym members exercise more; they also had better cardiovascular capabilities and were less likely to be obese. Gymnastics enthusiasts, especially those who have been members longer or shorter, have a higher fitness level, better cardiorespiratory fitness and a smaller waistline than their non-member peers.

Before their analysis, Lee and his co-authors suspected that gym members could be more sedentary outside the gym than non-members. “We thought they would be more tired, or happy to have done enough for the day,” he says.

But they did not find that either. “Physical activity outside the gym is the same for both groups,” he adds.

Because of the cross-sectional design of the study, Lee says it’s also possible that more active people are more likely to join a gym. And while the study is taking place in a city with a lot of health club options, he notes, people are eager to have a gym regularly.

And, of course, you have to introduce yourself. “It’s true that some people with a gym membership do not go regularly, just as some people still do not have membership,” says Lee. For this study, some of the measures were taken in the gyms themselves, ensuring that memberships were used.

But according to Lee, the study confirms that membership in a fitness center can help people who do not exercise enough on their own. Only half of Americans get the recommended amount of aerobic activity, according to the study reports, and only about 20% abide by the guidelines on strength training.

“At the gym, you can use weights or resistance machines,” says Lee. “In real life, there are a lot of daily activities that improve the muscles.” (The researchers did not ask participants if they had a weight or other fitness equipment at home.)

Researchers report no conflict of interest and no financial interest in fitness clubs. The study is published in the journal PLOS ONE.

Lead author Elizabeth Schroeder, a former graduate student from Iowa State, says it may be more effective than just losing weight, and she hopes it will work.
