Funke Akindele was arrested for hosting a birthday party during the lockdown in Lagos, police said.
A popular Nigerian actress has been brought to justice for hosting a birthday party during a lockdown to curb the spread of coronavirus in the country’s commercial capital, Lagos.
Funke Akindele, a Nollywood movie star known as Jenifa, and her husband pleaded guilty in court and were each fined 100,000 naira ($ 260).
The court also sentenced them to 14 days of community service.
He decided that the couple “would visit 10 important public places in the state of Lagos to inform the public of the consequences of not complying with the restriction order”.
They were accused of hosting Saturday night guests for her husband in their upscale residence in Lekki.
Other suspected party guests, including famous singer Naira Marley, have been invited to report to the police criminal investigation service for questioning, state police spokesman said on Monday, Lagos, Bala Elkana.
Akindele’s actions sparked an angry reaction from her online fans after she appeared in advertisements calling on Nigerians to observe measures of social distancing.
The actress posted an apology on her Instagram page on Sunday.
“I am sorry if I misled you. I appreciate your concerns and I promise to always practice what I preach,” she said. “I promise to always support the government in creating greater awareness to end this pandemic.”
